Over 1,100 representatives from Union Solidarity and Development Party to contest in Myanmar's general election

YANGON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,129 representatives from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) will contest in Myanmar's general election scheduled to be held on Nov. 8, Dr. Nandar Hla Myint, spokesperson of the party told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Of them, 320 candidates will compete for the House of Representatives (Lower House), 165 for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), others for region or state parliaments and for seats in region or state parliaments reserved for ethnic minorities, the party's announcement said.

Meanwhile, over 1,100 representatives from the ruling NLD party will take part in the general election, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, vice chairman of the party told Xinhua recently.

In the upcoming general election, a total of 330 constituencies will contest for the House of Representatives (Lower House) while 168 constituencies for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 644 constituencies for region or state parliaments and 29 constituencies for ethnic minority of region or state parliaments.

About 37 million people are eligible to vote in the election, in which 95 political parties are registered to take part.

Myanmar's previous general election was held on Nov. 8, 2015, in which Aung San Suu Kyi-led National League for Democracy (NLD) won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats and has run the government since April 2016.

The five-year term of the incumbent NLD government will end in March 2021. Enditem
