Support rate for Abe's Cabinet falls amid concerns over COVID-19 resurgence

TOKYO, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The approval rating for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet dropped as COVID-19 resurgence continues to spread in urban areas of the country including the capital and its surrounding areas, a nationwide poll showed Wednesday.

According to the survey conducted by Japan's public broadcaster NHK between Saturday and Monday of people aged 18 or older, the approval rating for Abe's Cabinet stood at 34 percent, two points less than the previous survey, while the disapproval rate rose two points to 47 percent.

Of those who support Abe's Cabinet, 58 percent said the administration "seems better than other alternatives," while 16 percent said it represents political parties they support.

Of those who disapprove the Cabinet, 37 percent said they don't expect much from the Cabinet's policies, while 28 percent said they don't trust Abe, NHK's poll showed.

As regards the COVID-19 outbreak, 40 percent of respondents said that they are worried very much and 47 percent said they are worried to some extent.

When asked if the central government should declare another state of emergency over the coronavirus, 57 percent answered yes and 28 percent said there is no need. Enditem
