BLANTYRE, Malawi, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- As the world commemorates the International Youth Day, youths in Malawi have pledged to support the health sector through different life-changing actions.

According to the Ministry of Health in Malawi, the health services have been interrupted heavily due to COVID-19.

For instance, Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) recently hinted that blood supply in hospitals has gone down because many of its supplies are closed.

For days, Anita Kautsi, 45, has been moving around Blantyre hospitals in search of blood for her anaemic child. According to her, the situation was hectic. For MBTS, this is one of the biggest challenges that the institution is facing during this time.

In trying to reverse the situation, the youth in Malawi have pledged to devote themselves in blood donation and raising awareness on COVID-19.

Thompson Simwaka, 22, has been donating blood to MBTS for three years. According to him, it's very important for the youth to be on the forefront in helping the health sector due to challenges it is facing.

"I urge my fellow youth to voluntarily go and donate blood. As youths, we have a big role to serve in our societies with our full potential," he said.

Similarly, Milcaf Yelesani, a student at the University of Malawi, has urged the youth across the country regardless of their background to come together in finding solutions to global problems.

"The world is looking forward to us, the youth, to become more proactive, whilst we are still young, we should do everything possible in efforts of bringing tangible solutions," he said.

This year, youth across the world are celebrating the international youth day under a theme "Youth Engagement for Global Action", however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, youth in Malawi are celebrating at their homes. Enditem
