NUR-SULTAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission (CEC) on Wednesday revealed the preliminary results of the Senate election.

Akhylbek Kurishbayev from Nur-Sultan constituency, Sultanbek Makizhanov from Almaty and another 15 candidates received more than 50 percent of the votes, the commission announced.

According to the CEC, a total of 46 candidates contested 17 senate seats representing 14 regions and three municipalities, while 3,069 deputies from local parliament participated in the vote and 185 domestic and foreign observers monitored the election.

The commission also inspected the implementation of pandemic-prevention measures during the vote.

Kazakhstan's Senate election is carried out on the basis of indirect suffrage by secret ballot. The terms of the 17 current senate lawmakers will expire in October.

The senate has a total of 49 seats, of which 15 are appointed by the president and the other 34 are elected by the 14 regions and three municipalities, with half being re-elected every three years. Enditem
