ATHENS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Greece's health authorities announced on Wednesday 262 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the most significant daily rise since the end of the lockdown on May 4.

Nationwide, COVID-19 infections increased to a total of 6,177, of which 1,528 were related to overseas travel.

Most of the new infections were detected in the Attica region, with 66 cases, and in the northern Thessaloniki region, with 85 cases.

Among the cases in Thessaloniki were 36 people in a nursing home, which was placed under a seven-day lockdown. According to the AMNA news agency, all people testing positive were transferred to hospitals in Thessaloniki.

The Health Ministry's spokesman Sotirios Tsiodras, who visited the nursing home, said that the increased percentage of cases in Attica and Thessaloniki had direct contact with visitors who either returned from Halkidiki seaside resort to Thessaloniki or from Cycladic Islands to Attica.

Across the country, two patients passed away in the past few hours, raising the death toll to 216. Currently, 24 patients were treated in intensive care units, while 132 have been discharged from ICUs. Enditem
