LUSAKA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said on Thursday that it was keen to pursue research aimed at finding a vaccine for the treatment of the dreaded COVID-19.

The country has since embarked on engagements with other partners such as the Center for Disease Control to participate in trials for the vaccine.

"The world is moving steadily towards finding a vaccine. Zambia is not lagging behind and we are engaging with other partners to participate in trials," he told reporters during a daily COVID-19 update.

He noted that finding the vaccine was the only sustainable way of dealing with the pandemic, adding that other measures currently in place were just meant to suppress it.

He further urged researchers in the country to accelerate efforts in finding a vaccine for the pandemic which was causing global public health challenges.

Zambia, he said, was alert to any evidence that may be adduced in any part of the world for the vaccine.

Meanwhile, Zambia recorded 162 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours from 1,017 tests conducted. This brings the cumulative cases to 8,663. Enditem
