PRAGUE, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Czech Republic reported 506 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday, setting a new high in daily cases since March when the first case was reported in the country, according to latest data released by the Ministry of Health on Saturday morning.

The total number of confirmed cases now reached 21,551, with 411 coronavirus-related deaths.

However, the government and epidemiologists believe that the current situation differs from that in the first wave of the epidemic in the spring, as evidenced by a lower number of the hospitalized and of deaths.

Right now, 108 people are being treated in hospital.

A total of 16,062 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered in the Czech Republic.

On Thursday, Health Minister Adam Vojtech announced the latest change in the planned reintroduction of face mask rules. From Sept. 1, face masks will not be compulsory in schools, shops, restaurants and service facilities such as hairdressers, but will have to be worn on public transport, in offices, health and social care facilities and at the polling stations during the October regional and Senate elections.
