Over 87,000 residents affected by monsoon flooding across Myanmar since mid-July

YANGON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Over 87,000 residents were affected by monsoon flooding in Myanmar's regions and states since July 11, an official from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement told Xinhua.

"At present, there are some 19,000 flood-hit victims left at the shelters in Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay and Bago regions as well as Kachin, Kayin, Shan, Kayah and Mon states," said Daw Phyu Lei Lei Tun, director of disaster management department under the ministry.

From July 11 to Monday, four deaths were reported in Magway region, she added.

So far, the ministry has provided humanitarian assistance and protective essentials to be used in COVID-19 fights to flood victims as well as building materials for the victims whose houses were destroyed by the floods.

During the months of rainy seasons, people are urged to take precautionary measures and follow guidelines issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department, said the official. Enditem
