BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 4,696 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 966,189, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 120 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 16,568.

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan's Public Education Ministry has proposed the government opening schools both online and in class from Sept. 14, depending on the coronavirus threat at each regional level, Minister Sherzod Shermatov said Tuesday.

Uzbekistan has earlier considered three scenarios for school reopenings: a traditional format, online and a hybrid of both traditional and online teaching.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 2,447 within one day to 157,859, with the death toll adding by 99 to 6,858, the country's health ministry said on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, 1,807 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 112,867.

NEW YORK -- Life in many parts of China has become normal in recent weeks, U.S. media has reported.

"In Wuhan, where the coronavirus emerged eight months ago, water parks and night markets are packed elbow to elbow, buzzing like before," said an article published by The New York Times on Sunday.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand confirmed seven new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, all related to the community outbreak in Auckland, the country's largest city.

There are no new imported cases reported over the past 24 hours, according to a health ministry statement.

BERLIN -- The German economy contracted by a record 9.7 percent in the second quarter of this year amid the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Statistical Office said on Tuesday.

The contraction, the sharpest decline since the country began producing quarterly growth figures in 1970, followed a smaller drop in activity of 2 percent in the first quarter.

CANBERRA -- A majority of Australians support banning all international flights to the country and compulsory tracking for COVID-19 patients to prevent the spread of virus, according to a poll.

The Guardian Australia on Tuesday published a survey of more than 1,000 Australians on the country's ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic.

ULAN BATOR -- The Mongolian government on Tuesday extended the country's heightened state of readiness for another 15 days until Sept. 15 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision to extend the heightened state of readiness was made as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19, the government's press office said in a statement.

BEIJING -- China-made COVID-19 vaccines and test kits will be on show at the upcoming 2020 China International Fair for Trade in Services, to be held in Beijing in early September, according to the organizers.

Zheng Jinpu, from the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, said global cooperation on epidemic prevention and China's scientific and technological achievements in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic will be a highlight at the fair.

WUHAN -- More than 9,100 students have returned to Wuhan University in the provincial capital of central China's Hubei Province some eight months after the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in the once hard-hit city.

Undergraduate students will make up for missed courses from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4 at the university, one of the most prestigious universities in China.

UNITED NATIONS -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday called for the recovery of tourism from COVID-19 in a sustainable way.

"It is imperative that we rebuild the tourism sector. But it must be in a way that is safe, equitable and climate friendly," said Guterres in a video message for the launch of his policy brief on tourism and COVID-19.

NEW DELHI -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in India surged to 3,167,323, while the death toll reached 58,390, showed the latest data released by the health ministry on Tuesday.

As many as 60,975 new cases and 848 deaths were recorded during the past 24 hours across the country.
