BRATISLAVA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Slovak football champions Slovan Bratislava beat Trencin 2-1 on the road in the domestic Fortuna Liga on Monday night, which was a much-needed win to boost team morale.

Slovan Bratislava had been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League qualifiers due to members of the team testing positive for COVID-19 last week in the Faroe Islands.

Trencin, which plays home matches in Zilina, as the stadium in Trencin is being rebuilt, witnessed a weak start to the 2020-21 season, sitting in last place with no wins and only two draws.

A sudden fast-break stunned the visitors in the 23rd minute when Jurij Medvedev put Trencin ahead 1-0.

Bukari could have stretched the lead to two 15 minutes later after a slalom through the defenders.

The hero of the day was Slovan's Argentinian defender Vernon de Marco. One minute before the interval, he produced a wonderful header on David Strelec's set-piece, and in the 70th minute he completed Bratislava's turnaround by sending a low shot into Trencin's goal, sealing the final score at 2-1.

Bratislava's third win in four matches pushed the team from Slovakia's capital up to second with one game played less than league-leading Dunajska Streda and third-ranked Zilina, which also has nine points. Enditem
