JAKARTA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude jolted off eastern Indonesia earlier Tuesday but there were no initial reports of damages or casualties, and it did not potentially trigger a tsunami, officials said.
The tremors were felt in the provinces of Maluku and West Papua, according to the Agency of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics.
The quake struck at 07:45 a.m. Jakarta time (0045 GMT) with the epicenter at 198 km southeast Central Maluku district of Maluku province and the depth at 193 km under seabed.
The intensity of the quake was felt at II to III MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Ambon, the provincial capital of Maluku, Kairatu town of southwestern coast of Seram island and Banda island.
In nearby West Papua province, the intensity was felt at II to III MMI in the provincial capital of Manokwari and Sorong town.
Disaster management agency officials in both provinces confirmed that there were no preliminary reports of damages or casualties.
"The jolts were felt here, but did not cause panic. So far, there are no building damaged or people injured. But we still check the risks further," Secretary of Disaster Agency of Maluku Province Sais Salong told Xinhua by phone.
Head of the Disaster Management Agency of West Papua Province Derek Ampnir also told Xinhua that the tremors did not trigger damages in Manokwari city and Sorong town.
Indonesia has been frequently hit by earthquakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-impacted zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire." Enditem
