ROME, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Italian Serie A elites Roma announced on Tuesday that Nicolo Zaniolo will under surgery after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Zaniolo picked up an injury after a challenge with Donny van de Beek in the UEFA Nations League fixture between Italy and the Netherlands, and the result may cast a shadow on the star's future.

"Nicolo Zaniolo will undergo surgery on Wednesday after MRI scans on Tuesday confirmed the player has suffered a complete tear to the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee," read a statement of Roma.

It is the second such injury in eight months for Zaniolo, as the 21-year-old was stretchered off in the Serie A game between Roma and Juventus in January, following a tackle with Adrien Rabiot and Matthijs de Ligt.

The midfielder then posted a message to fans on social media as he prepared to undergo surgery to repair his ACL.

"For the many, many people who have been asking how I am, this morning I underwent medical checks that revealed a tear of the cruciate ligament in my left knee," he wrote.

"I thank all of you, those of you who are Roma fans and those that aren't, for the support, I will be back soon!" Enditem
