TEHRAN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that Iran and Turkey as two big regional powers must expand their cooperation to defeat "foreign plots."

"Iran and Turkey are the two great powers in the region, and there have always been animosities and grudges against both countries that still exist today," Rouhani told his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the 6th meeting of the Turkey-Iran High-Level Cooperation Council held via videoconference.

Rouhani said the only way to overcome "foreign plots" is further expanding the relations between the two countries.

He praised the "very solid foundation" of the Iran-Turkey relations, based on good neighborliness, common values, mutual respect and attention to "common interests, stability, security and peace in the region."

The Iranian president also hailed the state of the Iran-Turkey border as a "border of peace and friendship."

Rouhani hoped that the Tuesday meeting and the agreements that would be reached by the two countries will be fruitful and constructive for promoting the bilateral relations.
