KABUL, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- An explosion took place in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, in the morning rush hour on Wednesday, sending a column of thick smoke into the sky and triggering panic, a witness said.

"We heard a huge blast in the Taimani locality, Police District 4. The whole place has now been sealed off," an eye-witness told Xinhua.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures shortly after the explosion occurred roughly at 7:30 a.m. local time. There is fear of possible causalities.

"The nature of the blast seemed to be a suicide car bomb blast. A convoy of a high ranking official was passing by the area, and the motorcade could be the obvious target of the blast," the witness said.

Wednesday's explosion came as peace efforts have been underway with the Taliban.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Enditem
