PRAGUE, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan teen Jacob Kiplimo established himself as a rising star in the 5,000m distance, edging Doha worlds silver medalist Selemon Barega in the home straight for his first big-meet victory in 12 minutes and 48.63 seconds at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic on Tuesday.
Barega, who led the world over the distance, was all alone in the front with four laps to go. But the 19-year-old Kiplimo broke out and took the lead with two laps left and fended off his older opponent who caught up in the home straight, sprinting across the line in 12:48.63 to set new meeting record. The Ethiopian had to settle for second place in 12:49.08.
"I wanted the fast time so I kept on pushing," Kiplimo told World Athletics official website. "It was a fight in the home straight. And it was wonderful."
Two-time world 400m hurdle champion Karsten Warholm had his 10th consecutive victory, clocking 47.62 seconds.
"It's always nice to get a win, but I was a little surprised by the time to be honest," Warholm confessed.
After a European record-breaking 46.87 at the Diamond League in Stockholm last month, the Norwegian did not seem to catch his rhythm in the eastern Czech city.
"I had a little stutter step, I had to switch (lead legs). There was nothing dramatic about it, I just had to do a switch. But that probably affected my time. Everything that breaks your rhythm is going to impact your finish time," he said.
Elsewhere, world champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands beat Sheila Chelangat and Yasemin Can in the women's 1,500m in 14:37.85. Ryan Crouser of the United States remained unbeaten this year with a 22.43m throw in men's shot put. Christian Taylor jumped for a 17.42m world lead to win the men's triple jump. Kenya Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon refreshed the meeting record in the women's 1,500m with a convincing 3:59.05 victory. Enditem
