BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.86 percent at 3,254.63 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 3.25 percent lower at 12,861.75 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices expanded to 1.04 trillion yuan (about 152 billion U.S. dollars) from 924.4 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers 1,146 to 268 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,829 to 377 on the Shenzhen bourse.
Shares related to iron and steel and port and shipping sectors led the gains, with shares of Chongqing Iron & Steel Company Limited surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 1.74 yuan per share.
Bucking the trend, shares in the cloud gaming and biological vaccines sectors suffered heavy losses.
