BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Wednesday reported 879 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country so far to 20,462.

The center said in a statement that 82 patients have newly recovered and 10 more died, bringing the total recoveries to 2,329 and the death toll to 324.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported five new cases of COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,059 and 35 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

The five new cases have recently entered Vietnam from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry, noting that their ages range from four to 60.

KABUL -- Afghanistan's Public Health Ministry registered 24 new COVID-19 positive cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 38,544 since the outbreak of the virus in February in the country, a statement of the ministry said Wednesday.

According to the statement, two patients affected with the virus had died over the period, totaling the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,420 since February.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 75 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 57,166.

Of the new cases, 14 are imported cases, one is a community case and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Wednesday reported 838 new COVID-19 cases and four more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 92,082 and the death toll to 552, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 9,308 patients are receiving treatment, including 89 in ICU, according to the statement.

HONG KONG -- The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Wednesday announced that the clinical trials of a nasal spray vaccine for COVID-19 jointly developed by the university's Department of Microbiology and mainland institutions have been approved.

The State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases has been working on the vaccine with Xiamen University and Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy.

NAIROBI -- Kenya's car imports are likely to take two years to recover from the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peter Otieno, chairman of Car Importers Association of Kenya, said on Wednesday.

Otieno said that in 2019, Kenya imported approximately 130,000 vehicles. However, "since March when the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Kenya there has been a 95 percent drop in demand for vehicles. This means it could take between two and three years for the industry to recover to pre-COVID-19 levels," Otieno said.

BANGKOK -- Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday said that a South Korean man tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from Bangkok to his homeland.
