CHENGDU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Qin Guangrong, former Party chief of southwest China's Yunnan Province and a former senior national legislator, on Thursday stood trial at the Chengdu Municipal Intermediate People's Court in Sichuan Province, southwest China, pleading guilty to charges of taking bribes while in public office.
Prosecutors accused Qin of taking advantage of his former positions in Yunnan to seek profits for various companies and individuals in project contracting, equity transfer and job promotions between 2003 and 2014.
In return, Qin accepted money and gifts worth more than 23.89 million yuan (over 3.49 million U.S. dollars) personally or through his family members, according to prosecutors.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, and the defendant and his lawyers cross-examined the evidence. Both sides gave their full accounts of events.
In his final statement, Qin pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.
The trial was open to the public and was attended by legislators, political advisors, journalists and members of the public.
