Roundup: COVID-19 cases in Iran hit 404,648; Turkey sees no slowdown in transmission rate

CAIRO, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in Iran on Monday reached 404,648, after an overnight registration of 2,619 patients. Meanwhile, Turkey said it did not see any slowdown in the transmission rate of the novel coronavirus.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry for Health and Medical Education, said the pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 23,313 people in Iran, after 156 new deaths were registered in the last 24 hours.

In Turkey, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said there is "no slowing down in the rate of transmission of the infection" in the country.

Turkey confirmed 1,716 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, raising the total number to 292,878, while 63 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 7,119.

Saudi Arabia announced 607 new cases and 37 more deaths, raising the tally of confirmed cases to 326,258 and the death toll to 4,305.

The kingdom also reported 1,060 more recovered patients, taking the total recoveries to 303,930.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported that 4,169 new COVID-19 cases were detected during the day, bringing the total nationwide infections to 294,478.

A statement by the ministry said 4,427 recovered from COVID-19 during the day, the highest in a single day since the outbreak of the disease, raising the tally of recoveries to 229,132.

"The coexistence with coronavirus will continue, and we do not know when it will end," said Ryadh Abdul-Amir, head of the Public Health Department in the Iraqi Health Ministry, said in a press release.

The United Arab Emirates announced on Monday 777 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 80,266.

Morocco reported 1,517 new COVID-19 cases and 36 deaths, raising the tally of infections to 88,203 and the death toll to 1,614.

The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 in Morocco increased to 68,970 after 1,442 new ones were added, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

The COVID-19 fatality rate in Morocco is now 1.8 percent and the recovery rate is 78,2 percent, with 275 patients in intensive care units.

The Qatari Health Ministry announced 235 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 121,975.

Kuwait reported 708 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 95,472 and the death toll to 563, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 506 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 85,501.

The Omani Health Ministry announced 476 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 90,222.

During the last 24 hours, 157 people recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 83,928, while 10 new deaths were reported, raising the tally to 790, according to a ministry statement.

Algeria reported 242 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections to 48,496, and the death toll rose to 1,620.

Lebanon's number of COVID-19 cases increased by 547 to 24,857 while the death toll went up by five to 246, the Health Ministry said.

Caretaker Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan announced that the ministry will create a field hospital in Roumieh prison to control the spread of the virus there.

Palestine recorded 788 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, raising the total number to 40,298, including 255 deaths and 28,576 recoveries, since the outbreak in March, said Health Minister Mai al-Kaila, in a press statement.
