Aerial photo taken on Sept. 8, 2020 shows the cow breeding base at the Musha Ranch in Zhongwei, northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Zhongwei, a city located near the Tengger Desert, had been inflicted by sand and wind in history. For years, the city has been searching for a method to harness and utilize the desert. Over the past seven years, the Musha Ranch in Zhongwei successfully transformed nearly 10,000 mu (about 666.67 hectares) of desert into a corn planting base through breeding cows. The ranch on the one hand takes good advantage of the dry climate in the desert where infectious diseases for cows rarely occur and on the other hand uses cow dung to manure the desert to make it arable. Currently, a total of 17,000 cows are being raised in the ranch that provides job opportunities to more than 1,700 people from neighbouring villages. (Xinhua/Wang Peng)
