HONG KONG, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following is the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries on Wednesday:

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,963 within one day to 228,993, with the death toll adding by 135 to 9,100, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 3,036 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 164,101.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 1,615 new COVID-19 cases and 21 new deaths, making the tally at 342,671 and death toll at 4,823, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 13,360 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 247,969 including 2,375 new recoveries on Wednesday, said the DGHS.

KABUL -- A total of 40 new COVID-19 positive cases have been registered in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of patients infected with the virus to 38,855, said a statement released by the country's Public Health Ministry.

According to the statement, 10 patients have died over the period, raising the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,436 since February when Afghanistan saw the coronavirus outbreak.

A total of 405 patients have recovered over the past 24 hours, totaling the number of recovered to 32,503 in the country.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 62 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 10,031.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that one of the new cases is imported and 61 are local transmissions.

The spike in new cases over recent weeks prompted Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to warn the public that the government would reimpose its movement control order should cases sharply rise, in a televised speech to the public on Tuesday evening.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 272,934 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,550 new daily cases.

The DOH said the number of recoveries also rose to 207,858 after 524 more patients have survived the disease.

The DOH added that 69 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 4,732.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported one new death of COVID-19, bringing the total deaths to 25.

New Zealand confirmed one new case of COVID-19, detected in a recent returnee in a managed isolation facility.

The country's total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is now 1,451, which is the number reported to the World Health Organization.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally surpassed the 5 million mark, reaching 5,020,359, said latest data released by the federal health ministry.

As many as 90,123 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, revealed the data.

The country's death toll due to the pandemic reached 82,066, as 1,290 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours from across the country.

Still there are 995,933 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 3,942,360 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals across the country.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 113 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Wednesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 22,504.

The daily caseload stayed below 200 for two straight weeks, but it continued to grow in triple digits since Aug. 14.

No more death was reported, leaving the death toll at 367. The total fatality rate stood at 1.63 percent.

YANGON -- Myanmar confirmed four new deaths, bringing the death toll to 39 in total on Wednesday morning, said a daily release from the Health and Sports Ministry.

Four more COVID-19 patients with underlying diseases died of acute respiratory failure, the release said.

Meanwhile, 134 more patient tested positive for COVID-19 and the number of infections reached 3,636 on Wednesday morning.
