Chinese shares surge, led by financial stocks

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks climbed on Friday, led by strong gains in the financial sector, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up by 2.07 percent at 3,338.09 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.77 percent higher at 13,245.09 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices expanded to 835.69 billion yuan (about 123.64 billion U.S. dollars) from 753.6 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 1,270 to 158 on the Shanghai bourse, and by 1,695 to 509 in Shenzhen.

Shares in the financial sector went higher, with insurance firms, brokerages, and banks leading the gains.

Shares of the People's Insurance Company (Group) of China Ltd. rose by 5.75 percent to 7.17 yuan per share. Anhui Xinli Finance Co., Ltd. surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 11.2 yuan.

Shares in real estate and construction material sectors also saw gains.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.52 percent to close at 2,596.08 points on Friday. Enditem
