BAGHDAD, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Health Ministry on Monday reported 3,821 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total nationwide infections to 322,856.

It also reported that 4,484 more patients recovered from COVID-19 during the day, the highest in a single day since the outbreak of the disease, raising the tally of recoveries to 258,075.

The ministry also confirmed 70 new deaths from the infectious disease, taking the death toll to 8,625.

A total of 2,076,844 tests have been carried out across the country since the outbreak of the disease in February, with 19,756 done during the day, the statement added.

"Iraq is keen to get its need of the vaccine because Iraq, like the rest of the world, is seeking to early obtain a safe and effective vaccine," Deputy Health Minister Hazim al-Jumaili told the official al-Sabah newspaper.

Iraq has taken a series of measures to contain the pandemic since February when the first coronavirus case appeared in the country.

China has been helping Iraq fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

From March 7 to April 26, a Chinese team of seven medical experts spent 50 days in Iraq to help contain the disease, during which they helped build a PCR lab and install an advanced CT scanner in Baghdad.

Since March 7, China has also sent three batches of medical aid to Iraq. Enditem
