Confirmed COVID-19 cases rise in Asia-Pacific as India records 83,347 new cases

HONG KONG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries are still witnessing a growing outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday as India has recorded over 5.6 million confirmed cases in total.

The number of confirmed cases in India rose to 5,646,010 Wednesday morning, India's health ministry said.

During the past 24 hours, 83,347 new cases were reported in India. Besides, 1,085 deaths were also recorded, taking the death toll to 90,020.

The number of confirmed cases in the Philippines surged to 294,591 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,833 new daily cases on Wednesday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries also rose to 231,373 after 765 more patients have recovered.

The DOH added that 44 more patients have died, bringing the death toll to 5,091.

Bangladesh reported 1,666 new cases and 37 new deaths, bringing the total cases to 352,287 and the death toll to 5,044, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 14,150 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 262,953 including 2,163 new recoveries on Wednesday, said the DGHS.

The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 59 new infections, marking the lowest daily figure since June 30 when 54 cases were reported.

While Tokyo's cumulative total stands at 24,453, the highest among Japan's 47 prefectures, the metropolitan government has lowered its virus alert level from the highest on its four tier scale to the second-highest, meaning "vigilance against a resurgence of the virus is needed."

Myanmar reported 216 new infection cases, said a daily release from the Health and Sports Ministry.

With the newly confirmed cases, the number of laboratory confirmed cases rose to 6,959.

The death toll of COVID-19 also increased to 116, the release said.

South Korea reported 110 more cases as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 23,216.

Of the new cases, 40 were Seoul residents and 28 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.

Eleven were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 3,114.

No more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 388. The total fatality rate stood at 1.67 percent. Enditem
