Roundup: Iran's total COVID-19 cases rise to 432,798; Israel's tally surpasses 200,000

CAIRO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported 3,605 new COVID-19 patients overnight, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 432,798 on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Israel's tally surpasses 200,000.

The pandemic has so far claimed 24,840 lives in Iran, up by 184 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

Besides, 365,846 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 3,948 remain in intensive care units.

In Israel, the number of coronavirus cases reached 200,041, with 6,667 new cases, the state's Ministry of Health said.

It is the highest daily rise since the outbreak of the pandemic in Israel in late February, as the previous record was 6,063 registered on Sept. 16. The number of daily death cases hit a record high of 31, bringing the total fatalities to 1,316.

The number of recoveries reached 144,401, with 3,650 new recoveries.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported 5,055 new COVID-19 cases, the highest since the outbreak of the disease in the country, raising the tally to 332,635.

The ministry also confirmed 72 new deaths from the infectious disease, taking the death toll to 8,754, and 3,231 more patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries to 264,988.

The Iraqi Health Minister Hassan al-Tamimi told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the recovery rate during the past days has reached 80 percent of the total infections which is better than the past months."

Saudi Arabia announced 561 new infections and 27 more deaths, raising the tally of confirmed cases to 331,359 and the death toll to 4,569. The total recoveries in the kingdom rose by 1,102 to 313,786.

Turkey reported 1,767 COVID-19 cases, raising the total diagnosed patients to 308,069 in the country, the Turkish Health Ministry announced.

In the past 24 hours, 72 people died, taking the death toll to 7,711. A total of 1,027 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total recoveries to 270,723 in Turkey.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 1,083 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 87,530.

Meanwhile, 970 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 76,995, UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said. It also confirmed one more death, pushing the country's death toll to 406.

Egypt recorded early on Wednesday 113 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total infections to 102,254, said the Health Ministry.

The ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement that 19 more patients died from the novel coronavirus, raising the death toll to 5,806.

Morocco reported 2,397 new COVID-19 cases and 29 deaths, raising the tally of infections to 107,743 and the death toll to 1,918.

The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 in Morocco increased to 88,244 after 2,361 new ones were added, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

Kuwait reported 616 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 101,299 and the death toll to 590, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 729 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 92,341.

The Omani health ministry announced 628 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the sultanate to 95,339.

About 287 people recovered during the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of recoveries to 86,482, while ten reportedly died from the virus, raising the death toll to 875.

The Qatari health ministry announced 258 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 124,175.

Also, 240 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 121,006, while one death was reported, raising the fatalities to 212.

Lebanon's number of COVID-19 infections increased by 940 cases to 31,778 while the death toll went up by 13 to 328, the Health Ministry reported.

Director General of Rafic Hariri University Hospital Firas Abiad said that Lebanon needs to deal with the virus by adopting a new approach after the remarkable increase in cases in the past few days.

Abiad said he advises to shut the country down for two weeks to control the spread of the virus. But he is conscious that citizens may not commit to new lockdown measures given the dire economic situation in the country.

Tunisian health ministry reported 1,219 new infections with the novel coronavirus and ten more deaths, raising the total infections to 12,479 with 174 deaths.

"The current number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients reached 256 including 72 in intensive care units and 26 others are mechanically ventilated," it said.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila announced three deaths and 503 new COVID-19 cases in the Palestinian territories.

"Since the outbreak of the disease in the Palestinian territories, the health ministry recorded 47,117 cases, including 317 deaths, 34,421 recovered cases, and 12,379 receiving medical care," the minister said. Enditem
