Thailand mulls extension of COVID-19 control measures, India records over 80,000 new cases

HONG KONG, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries have witnessed a continuing COVID-19 outbreak as India again recorded over 80,000 new cases on Friday.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the Thai government and the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) will discuss whether to extend the emergency decree designed to stem the COVID-19 outbreak.

The prime minister said his team will be reviewing regulations for visiting business representatives and tourists ahead of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India rose to 5,818,570, India's federal health ministry said. During the past 24 hours, 86,052 new cases and 1,141 deaths were reported from across the country.

Australia reported 27,000 cases of COVID-19 about eight months after health authorities confirmed the first case in the country while confirming 18 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Malaysia reported 111 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said, bringing the national total to 10,687. Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that four of the new cases are imported and 107 are local transmissions.

Afghanistan reported 16 new cases, bringing the number of total cases in the country to 39,186, the country's Ministry of Public Health said.

The number of confirmed cases in the Philippines surged to 299,361 after the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,630 new cases.

South Korea reported 114 cases compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 23,455.

The daily caseload stayed above 100 for three straight days due to the continued cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province traceable to church services and a massive rally held in central Seoul on Aug. 15.

New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19, as one is an imported case detected in a managed isolation facility and the other is a community case.

Myanmar reported 171 new infections with five more deaths on Friday morning, said a release from the Health and Sports Ministry. With the newly confirmed cases, the number of infection cases has risen to 8,515 so far. Enditem
