Tunisia reports record daily COVID-19 cases of over 1,000

TUNIS, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia has reported its highest daily new coronavirus cases since the outbreak in the country on March 2, by confirming 1,087 new COVID-19 infections and 11 new deaths, announced Tunisian Ministry of Health on Saturday.

According to its daily epidemiological report, the ministry said that the total number of confirmed cases in Tunisia reached 14,392, with 191 deaths.

"The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients reached 270 including 71 in intensive care units and 27 others are mechanically ventilated," it said.

According to the Tunisian Ministry of Health, 10 regions are officially qualified as "hot spot" with a cumulative incidence exceeding 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

On Friday, Health Minister Faouzi Mehdi told private radio Mosaique FM that a series of measures will come into force from Sept. 28.

According to the minister, chairs will be banned in cafes and restaurants will have to comply with social distancing protocol with penalties that could reach the closure of spaces that violate the law.

In addition, guests for wedding parties will be reduced by 30 percent in terms of reception capacity, and the wearing of masks will now be compulsory in public and private means of transport.

According to the minister, a curfew can also be decreed on all Tunisian territory, if the epidemic situation worsens. Enditem
