ALGIERS, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune met Thursday with U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper over the issues of anti-terrorism and the Libyan crisis, the official APS news agency reported.

They discussed bilateral relations, prospects for strengthening their ties in many areas and development in the situation in Libya and other places in the region.

The two sides agreed that consultation and coordination should be pursued in order to "consolidate the foundations of security and peace in the region within the framework of respecting the unity and sovereignty of the countries in the region," Esper told media after the meeting.

The U.S. Defense Department said Thursday Esper discussed expanding military cooperation between the United States and Algeria with the president.

Esper arrived in Algeria after visiting Malta and Tunisia, as a part of a series of visits through the region. Enditem
