MALE, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Foreign Minister of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid called on South Asian countries to enhance cooperation in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported on Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Shahid said the pandemic has drawn attention to inequalities within and between countries in the region, and cooperation is necessary to overcome these challenges.

He thanked the international community, including regional partners such as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, for crucial aid in the form of grants, credit lines and uninterrupted supplies of essential commodities amid the pandemic.

Speaking at the virtually held Horasis Extraordinary Meeting in a panel, Shahid called for the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to be strengthened in order to enhance intra-regional trade and connectivity. Enditem
