5 miners killed, 15 injured in Ghana's collapsed mine pit

ACCRA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least five miners were killed and 15 others critically injured in a collapsed mining pit in Ghana's Central region, local police said on Friday.

The spokesman for the Central regional command of the Ghana Police Service Evans Ettie told Xinhua that the incident took place late Thursday while the miners were at work in an abandoned mining pit.

"The rescue team comprising the police and the National Disaster Management Organization rescued 15 survivors with injuries and recovered five bodies from the collapsed pit," Ettie said.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Dunkwa Government Hospital, while the bodies of the dead have been kept at the hospital's morgue, said the police spokesman.

Police investigations are underway to establish the cause of the disaster. Enditem
