RAMALLAH, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye announced on Wednesday that the government is to tighten the measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the Palestinian territories.

"The rate of daily infections from coronavirus in the Palestinian territories is still high and worrying," Ishtaye told the weekly meeting of the Palestinian Authority (PA) cabinet held in Ramallah.

He added that the PA carries on with tightening the measures "to restrict the spread of the virus amid the intensive return of the virus in several countries."

Ishtaye called on the Palestinian citizens "to contribute to combating the virus and abide by social distancing and wearing face masks in public and closed overcrowded places.

Meanwhile, he said that his government works on hiring hundreds of doctors, nurses and medical care servants, as well as increasing the number of ventilators and the number of beds in governmental hospitals.

In Gaza, the undersecretary of the interior ministry, Tawfiq Abu N'iem, warned earlier on Wednesday that his ministry might get back to imposing a full lockdown on the Gaza Strip if the number of COVID-19 cases increases.

Gaza Health Ministry said it recorded on Wednesday 127 new COVID-19 cases, adding that the total number of coronavirus cases recorded in the Gaza Strip had increased to 3,700 since March. Enditem
