India's industrial output falls 8 pct in August

NEW DELHI, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Industrial production in India dropped 8 percent in August, mainly due to a steep fall in mining and manufacturing compared to the same month last year, the data released by the Ministry of Statistics showed on Monday.

This is the sixth straight month when industrial production had fallen in the country.

The contraction in industrial production in July stood at 10.77 percent.

The manufacturing production registered a decline of 8.6 percent, while the output of mining and power segments slumped 9.8 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively.

During the first five months of the current financial year (April-August), the manufacturing production plunged 27.9 percent, the output of mining sector lost 18.2 percent and the power sector output slumped 10.4 percent.
