Thailand commemorates King Bhumibol on 4th anniversary of his passing

BANGKOK, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday led the country to perform a religious ceremony and merit-making in commemoration of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej to mark the fourth anniversary of his passing on Oct. 13, 2016.

Prayut and his wife presided over a merit-making ceremony at Sanam Luang in Bangkok to present alms to 89 monks.

They were joined by cabinet ministers and their spouses, government officials and members of the public.

At Siriraj Hospital, where the late King was given medical treatment, Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, presided over a merit-making ceremony to present alms to 39 monks.

The ceremony was also attended by many people, donned in yellow, the traditional colour representing the monarch in Thailand.

The alms presentation was followed by the chanting of prayers by the monks, in front of a huge portrait of the late King. All participants observed an 89-second silence.

On Tuesday evening, Prayut and his wife led the nation to perform a candle-lighting ceremony at Sanam Luang, near the Thai parliament building. Enditem
