TEHRAN, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported on Wednesday 279 deaths related to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, marking the highest daily deaths from the coronavirus in the country.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said at her daily briefing that 513,219 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed so far in Iran, after the registration of 4,830 infections in the past 24 hours, the ministry's website reported.

According to the spokeswoman, 2,237 of these new patients have been hospitalized.

The new 279 deaths, Sadat Lari added, took the overall death toll of the pandemic in Iran to 29,349.

She also noted that 414,831 patients have recovered or been discharged from hospitals since the beginning of the outbreak, while 4,609 patients remain in critical condition.

Iran announced its first cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19.

Iran and China have offered mutual help in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

In mid-February, at the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak in China, Iran lit up the Tehran Azadi (Liberty) Tower to show its solidarity with China, and donated 3 million masks to China.

In return, China delivered several shipments of medical supplies to Iran. On Feb. 29, a five-member Chinese medical team visited Iran for a month-long mission to help Iran fight the pandemic. Enditem
