KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported 589 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Thursday, bringing the national total to 18,129.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that three of the new cases are imported and 586 are local transmissions.

Three more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 170.

The majority of new cases are from the northern Borneo state of Sabah, with 304 of the new cases reported in the state.

Another 409 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 12,014, or 66.3 percent of all cases.

Of the remaining 5,945 active cases, 103 are being held in intensive care and 31 of those are in need of assisted breathing. Enditem
