LUSAKA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government has stopped South African musicians from performing at a rally, a senior government official said on Thursday.

South African musicians, Mafikizolo and Master KG, were invited to grace a COVID-19 sensitization rally in the Copperbelt Province on Saturday, Oct. 17 organized by the provincial mobilization committee of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

But Minister of Tourism and Arts Ronald Chitotela said no foreign musicians will be allowed to perform at the rally.

He told reporters that the government decided to stop the musicians because the organizers did not follow procedures stipulated by the country's National Arts Council (NAC) on pre-clearance.

He further said the ministry was not consulted by the organizers to provide guidance over the matter.

According to him, the decision was also meant to promote the local music industry and promote its growth.

The national arts body said on Wednesday that it did not clear the foreign musicians to come and perform in Zambia as required by law. Enditem
