ZHUJI, Zhejiang province, China, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Zhejiang Golden Bulls guard Wu Qian scored 39 points to help his team smash defending champions the Guangdong Southern Tigers 138-113 on the opening day of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league here on Saturday.

Wu also had 14 assists, while Liu Zeyi and Cheng Shuaipeng contributed 25 points each for Zhejiang. Guangdong point guard Zhao Rui had a team-high 20 points.

"It is a pity we were eliminated last season, so we were holding back our energy, and we became stronger during the short off-season," Wu said after the game.

The 26-year-old scored 12 points to help Zhejiang end the first quarter with a 40-21 advantage.

Wu continued his performance with two three-pointers and eight assists in the second quarter. Zhejiang led 73-52 going into the half-time break.

Zhejiang gave Guangdong no chance to rally, as Wu was on fire to help his side maintain a lead of nearly 30 points in the third quarter, which eliminated Guangdong's hope of cutting the deficit in the closing stages.

"We still have room to improve compared with some strong teams in the league," said Wu. Enditem
