TIRIN KOT, Afghanistan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two women were killed and two children were wounded after a mortar shell fired by Taliban militants struck a house in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province Saturday, a local government spokesman confirmed on Sunday.

"The incident occurred in Zar Tali locality of Dihrawud district in the west of provincial capital Tirin Kot. The wounded children were in critical condition. They were shifted to a regional hospital in neighboring Kandahar province early Sunday for treatment," spokesman Ahmad Shah Sahil told Xinhua.

The mountainous district, in the region 370 km southwest of Kabul, has been the scene of heavy clashes in recent months.

The Afghan civilians continue to bear the brunt of armed conflicts as more than 1,280 civilians were killed and over 2,170 others wounded due to fighting in the country in the first six months of 2020, according to figures of United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The mission has attributed 58 percent of civilian casualties to the Taliban and other insurgent groups. Enditem
