BERLIN, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Germany's Bavaria government imposed Tuesday a limited curfew in the district of Berchtesgadener Land, a popular vacation region near the Austrian border where a seven-day-infection of 236 confirmed cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants was recorded.

It was the first region in Germany where a limited curfew was reimposed since spring. The curfew took effect starting from 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Citizens may only leave their house "with good reasons," such as going to work, a doctor's appointment or shopping for daily needs, according to the district.

Furthermore, the mask obligation in public areas was extended, restaurants had to close at 8 p.m. and hotels were only allowed to host business travelers. According to the district, all tourist guests had to leave the district Tuesday.

New COVID-19 infections in Germany remained just below last week's record and rose by 6,868 within one day, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Tuesday.

The nationwide infection over the last seven days rose to 45.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest daily situation report by the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention.

Many districts already exceeded the critical threshold of 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, triggering an emergency mechanism that requires affected regions to introduce additional COVID-19 measures. Enditem
