TIRANA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in Albania reported 301 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single day record since the beginning of the pandemic in March, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection said on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, in the past 24 hours the medical staff have carried out 1,407 tests, of which, 301 were confirmed positive. The majority of the new cases, or 144, were in the capital city Tirana.

To date, Albania has registered a total of 17,651 cases, with 10,225 recoveries and 458 fatalities.

The country currently has 6,968 active cases.

During a meeting with the Anti-COVID-19 Task Force, Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu said Tuesday that the next three months will be difficult, calling on the public to wear face mask to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

"Regardless of the field work you will do and the work that the state and municipal police is doing in relation to the law enforcement task, we will be prepared as much as we can for our capacities to be able to withstand the increased flows. We would not like to have a second lockdown or drastic restrictions, as well as no overload of the health system," Manastirliu said. Enditem
