LILONGWE, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China donated 100,000 masks on Wednesday to Monica Chakwera, First Lady of Malawi, and through her to the Ministry of Education.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Liu Hongyang presented the masks to the First Lady at a ceremony held at Kamuzu Palace in Malawi capital Lilongwe.
Liu described the safety of kids as the priority of the country, hence the donation of the masks especially for Malawian students at the time when schools in Malawi have reopened.
The ambassador noted how the Malawi government has strived and managed to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections and deaths, and he committed his government's continued support to ending the spread of the pandemic.
" We believe Malawi will succeed in overcoming the pandemic, and will emerge into a brighter future of development and prosperity," he said.
Liu added that one of the main reasons China achieved fast development in the past seven decades is because the Chinese government and every family prioritised high-quality education for every boy and girl.
He further said as a "true friend and sincere partner", the Chinese government also attaches great importance to the well-being of Malawian people, including the education for children.
The First Lady hailed the Chinese government for the timely donation, saying the masks will help bring a conducive and stabilized learning environment where teachers will confidently execute their duties knowing that the students are safe.
However, Madame Chakwera said demand for Personal Protective Equipment remains huge in the country and there is a need for more well-wishers to emulate China's gesture. Enditem
