CAIRO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle three ancient artifacts, Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said on Thursday.

The custom authorities at Alexandria seaport thwarted the smuggling of the three objects that were hidden in a container of goods that was supposed to be exported, the ministry said in a statement.

The customs office reported the case to the ministry's archaeological unit at the port which proved the authenticity of the three pieces.

The confiscated objects were two porcelain-made artifacts from the 19th century and a colored glass vessel dating back to the early Islamic era, the statement said.

Egyptian authorities have been exerting great efforts to fight theft and smuggling of antiquates, and retrieve the stolen treasures smuggled to other countries. Enditem
