DAMASCUS, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Syrian mufti was killed on Thursday evening when an explosive device ripped through his car in a suburb of the capital Damascus, state news agency SANA reported.

The car of Adnan Afyouni, the mufti of Damascus, was hit by the explosive device near a mosque in the Qudsaya suburb north of Damascus, according to SANA.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor, Afyouni was one of the religious figures close to President Bashar al-Assad, and had mediated most of the reconciliation deals with the armed rebels in the countryside of Damascus.

Despite sporadic explosions, Damascus has been relatively safe since the army captured the rebels' last strongholds in the eastern countryside of the Syrian capital in 2018. Enditem
