5.4-magnitude quake hits Iran's town, no casualties reported

TEHRAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit Avaj town, 210 km southwest of Iran's capital Tehran, at 3:04 p.m. local time (1134 GMT) on Saturday, according to Iran's Seismological Center.

The focus of the earthquake, with a depth of 10 km, is 35.690 degrees north latitude and 48.971 degrees east longitude, the Center's website said.

Avaj is in Qazvin Province, close to the boundary with Hamadan Province.

According to semi-official news agency Fars, the shake was felt in the near towns of Kabudrahang, Razan and Tuyserkan, all in Hamadan.

Some 40 minutes after the jolt, Seyed Reza Salamati, public relations manager for the Red Crescent Organization in Hamadan Province, said no casualties or material damage had been reported so far, according to Fars.

Rescue teams are on full alert and assessment teams have been dispatched to the area, he added. Enditem
