Local advance voting for general elections begins in Myanmar

YANGON, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar kicked off a 14-day local advance voting for general elections on Sunday.

Elderly persons aged 60 years old and above, and people who are away from their original constituencies and unable to return to the respective constituencies as well as under COVID-19 quarantine are eligible to cast advance votes until Nov. 7, according to a release from the Union Election Commission (UEC) late Saturday.

During the period, the respective ward or village-tract election sub-commissions will arrange for the advance voting of persons aged 60 years old and above who are residing in the townships under the stay-at-home order because of the pandemic, and in the townships with dense population to be able to cast votes at their homes, the announcement said.

It was learnt that the advance voting period was previously scheduled to start on Oct. 29.

Myanmar's general elections 2020 will be held on Nov. 8 this year and the five-year term of the ruling National League for Democracy government will end in March 2021. Enditem
