TOKYO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan confirmed 644 new daily COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, bringing the nationwide total to 98,262 cases not including those related to a cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year.
Of the 644 new cases, The Tokyo metropolitan government said that 158 of them were reported in the capital city.
The latest figure for Tokyo marks the eighth straight day that COVID-19 cases in the capital of 14 million have been in triple digits.
Tokyo, the hardest hit by the pneumonia-causing virus among all of Japan's 47 prefectures, has seen in cumulative total of cases rise to 30,285, the metropolitan government said.
The western prefecture of Osaka, second hardest hit by the virus reported 142 new cases Tuesday, bringing its total tally to 12,231 infections.
Tokyo's neighboring prefecture of Kanagawa, meanwhile, reported 64 new infections, with its total caseload now reaching 8,452 COVID-19 cases.
According to the latest statistics released late Tuesday evening, the nationwide death toll from the virus currently stands at a total of 1,746 people. Enditem
