YANGON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Union Election Commission (UEC) on Tuesday announced the removal of some townships in two states from the list of no-voting areas for the upcoming general elections.
On Oct. 16, the commission called off polls in some places of Bago region, Kachin, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan states, citing that the areas do not meet a condition to hold free and fair elections.
Due to reports by respective sub-election commissions and ministries, the commission Tuesday removed three village tracts in Kyaukphyu township and four village tracts in Ann township of Rakhine state from the list of no-voting areas. Meanwhile, one ward in Muse township and one village tract each in Lashio and Kunlong township of Shan state were also removed from the list, respectively, the commission said.
The commission also added 94 village tracts in Paletwa township of Chin state to the list of areas where elections will be cancelled on Tuesday.
According to the commission, a total of 5,831 candidates involving candidates from 91 political parties and independent runners will take part in the elections which will be held across Myanmar on Nov. 8.
The 60-day election campaign has begun in Myanmar since early September and will conclude in the first week of November.
The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party won an absolute majority of parliamentary seats in last general elections on Nov. 8, 2015, and has been running the government since 2016. Enditem
