BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Mexico surpassed 900,000 on Wednesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

With the total COVID-19 cases in the country reaching 901,268, Mexico's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 89,814 as of 0430 GMT Wednesday, the CSSE data showed.

"In the past day, 643 new deaths and 5,942 new cases of COVID-19 have been registered in the system," Jose Luis Alomia, general director of epidemiology at Mexico's Ministry of Health said at a press conference broadcast on his agency's Twitter.

Mexico City has reported the highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, with 155,899 cases registered to date, according to health authorities.

Due to the pandemic, Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America after Brazil, is facing a historic economic decline of 9 percent for 2020, according to the International Monetary Fund. Enditem
