SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed in an overnight fierce gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Wednesday.

The gunfight broke out on Tuesday evening at village Mouchwa of Budgam district about 29 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were killed early today in a gunfight with joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army in Aribagh-Mouchwa village here," a senior police official posted in Budgam said. "The gunfight started last evening and ended this morning."

According to officials, the area was cordoned off following specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

The government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

According to police, the identities of the slain militants were being ascertained.

Militant groups opposing New Delhi's rule are engaged in a guerilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989. Gunfights between militants and government forces take place intermittently. Enditem
