NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A Long Island country club has been fined 17,000 U.S. dollars by the New York county government for hosting a wedding with at least 90 attendees, one third of whom later contracted COVID-19.

Thirty of the wedding guests in North Fork Country Club on Oct. 17 have since tested positive for the novel coronavirus, while 159 of their close contacts are in quarantine as a result, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone told a news conference Wednesday.

Bellone announced that the club violated New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo's executive order that limits nonessential gatherings to 50 attendees.

Commenting on media coverage on the event, Bellone tweeted Thursday that "this type of blatant disregard for the wellbeing of others is not only extremely disappointing -- it will not be tolerated. We have literally come too far here to turn back now."

Suffolk County has reported 48,829 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,019 related deaths so far, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Enditem
